Mail Theft
It has come to the attention of the Southern Pointe Homeowners Association of a growing concern with mail theft. Thieves are targeting mailboxes and stealing outgoing mail during the day and night. Checks have been stolen and "washed" with a new payee name and dollar amount written in. A washed check is one that has been altered by using chemicals to erase the ink on the check. Below are listed some tips to stop the theft problem.
- Deposit your outgoing mail at the post office, The UPS Store, or similar facility. Do not put outgoing mail in your street-side mailbox.
- Check your box daily for inbound mail. If you are out of town, stop delivery of your mail.
- To prevent "washing" of checks, a special ball point pen can be purchased. It is a Uniball Signo 207. It is available at office supply stores and Wal-Mart and retails for around $3.00. It was developed by an FBI consultant specializing in check security.
- If you know you have mail theft, report the incident to the Postmaster and the police. The more they hear from us concerning thefts, the more they will investigate.
- Tax time is approaching and the thieves will be on the lookout for incoming and outgoing tax checks.
We may not be able to completely stop all mail theft but we can curtail a lot of by being vigilant and reporting any theft or suspicious activities.
